 The Rocks Cry Out

“I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

 Madison’s relationship with rocks.

A journey from inspiration to destination.

October 1 - 5, 2018
Reception: Thursday, Oct. 4, 6 - 8 p.m.

This body of work started as an exploration of the text from Luke 19:40, “If they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” I found these words powerful, though at the time I didn’t fully understand why, and truth be told I’m still learning. I took these words for my own and began to imagine what if rocks and stones had a voice, what would they say? Would they say anything at all? I found rocks from all over California and started studying the form, realizing I wanted to be inspired by the rocks but not let the rocks limit the body of work. The second portion of my exploration was investigating the first part of the text, “If they keep quiet”. This made me think more of the rocks surroundings, what would make a rock speak? What would make a rock cry? In short, this body of work represents the relationship between and artist and inspiration, and with that the struggle to make sense of it all.
