Sacramento State’s Veterans Success Center will host its first veteran-specific career fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, at the Alumni Center.

Representatives of more than two dozen major employers, including PG&E, UPS, AT&T and UC Davis Health Systems, will talk with student-veterans about job and career opportunities. The event is free. RSVP to Jeff Weston, director of the Veterans Success Center, at The first 200 people to register will be treated to lunch.

The event is sponsored by PG&E.

“We do a good job of getting veterans into the University and through the University. Now what we want to focus on, in addition, is getting them into the workforce after they graduate,” says Weston, an Air Force veteran who earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees at Sacramento State.

This fall, 800 student-veterans are enrolled at Sacramento State, along with 569 dependents of disabled vets, who also receive education benefits from the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Twenty-eight percent of the student-veterans are women. Ninety-five percent of the student-veterans transferred to Sac State from community colleges.

“What we have here is unique,” Weston says. “Centers like this are important, and you don’t see them at every university. We offer veteran-specific admissions. We do a lot of fundraising. We have a dedicated certifying official. At certain times of the day, you’ll see 15 or 20 students gathered here, talking. It’s like their sorority or fraternity. It’s their place to go on campus.”
