My recent work explores the essence of memory, its distortion and degradation throughout time, taking the physical object and exposing its transient nature. The home is a central figure that our lives revolve around, being places of re-visitation and concrete familiarity. My process for painting begins with rifling through archived photographs from my parents’ lives before me. Spending intimate time with these photos, I develop a sense of acquaintance through familiarity and draw conclusions about the contexts in which they were first taken. The idea of time as a non-linear concept deeply resonates with me. The idea that all things that have happened are happening now concurrently, yet we only perceive the linear. Although this understanding of the universe is fairly radical, giving it context within our lives and our personal history is strange but comforting. The image is passed from physical form, to memory, to history, while I work to uncover the personal narratives that lay within the photographic instant. The “ghosts of history” are summoned into physical form, re-examined and re-contextualized. Combining images of my personal history with iterations of the home and pattern—both designed pattern (carpet, wallpaper, fabric) as well as natural, the work aims to suspend domesticity within the liminal void of material nothingness. -Allie Lown
