The Balinese gamelan group Gamelan Sekar Jaya is a sixty-member company of musicians and dancers, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The musicians play on various types of gamelan—sets of bronze or bamboo percussion instruments that are made and tuned together to form an integral, and indivisible, whole. Each presents a unique universe of tuning, sound color, and style. Founded in 1979, Gamelan Sekar Jaya has performed throughout California, the US, and Bali—in venues ranging from New York’s Symphony Space to remote village squares in Bali.
